Standing Back Shoulder Exercise to Correct Shoulder Pain

Standing Back Shoulder Exercise to Correct Shoulder Pain

I’ve dedicated a huge chunk of my career as a personal trainer, specializing in working with fabulous folks over 50. Why, you ask? Because that’s when I turned 50! Ten years later, at 60, I’m here, aiming to reverse those pesky movement patterns we unknowingly create throughout life. These habits, sometimes not the healthiest, lead to discomforts, imbalances, and even injuries.

The good news? With my extensive experience, I’ve carefully curated exercises that work for just about anyone. Whether you’re like me, a fit 60-year-old, or someone who’s led a more sedentary life in their 60s or 70s, I’ve got you covered.

Now, let’s talk about today’s special! Ever felt that nagging shoulder pain? Wonder why your upper back feels so tense? Our first episode zeroes in on that. It’s an exercise designed to target the back of your shoulders, the upper back trapezius, and the rhomboids, which are between the shoulder blades.

Why is this important? Sixty, seventy years of gravity, computer work, and staring down at our phones has us leaning forward, creating an imbalance in our posture. To reverse this, we’ll be working on strengthening our back. The exercise uses resistance bands, available in varied thicknesses, ensuring there’s a fit for everyone.

The mechanics are simple: stand (or sit if that’s more comfortable) straight, hold the band taut between your hands, and pull it towards your chest. Think of it as closing elevator doors with your shoulder blades. Do this about 12 to 15 times, and you’ve completed a set. Over time, you’ll not only better your posture but also prevent or even reverse shoulder issues.

In the grand scheme of things, my goal is straightforward: I want us to make our second 50 years even better than the first! Remember, I’ve got five more episodes coming your way, packed with more exercises and tips.
