Motion is Lotion: How to Use Movement to Reduce Muscle Pain
Hey everybody, it’s Judy Torel here, from “Your Second 50”, and today we’re diving into episode number two of my Behavioral Medicine series. If you’re over 60 and you’re struggling with muscle pain, stiffness, or discomfort, I promise, this one’s for you.
Firstly, let’s unravel what *Behavioral Medicine* means. Simply put, it’s my term for behaviors that act like medicine, minus the pharmacology or surgery. And our catchphrase for today? “Motion is Lotion”. Now, this phrase might have roots in addressing arthritis, but its principle applies to all muscles – keep them moving, and they stay soothed.
I’ve had countless clients, and even from my own personal experiences (yes, I’m a part of the over 60 club too), describe a variety of muscle issues. It can be the stiffness after waking up, or the hip seizing after sitting for too long. And who here hasn’t felt those dreaded muscle spasms?
So, what’s the remedy? It’s a *mobility routine* I’ve designed just for us, based on the “motion is lotion” mantra. It’s about giving our muscles the treatment they crave – movement. And no, we’re not going to be doing the yoga poses from our younger days. This is a routine tailored for the 60, 70, 80, and beyond crowd. The best part? It’s all standing, so no troublesome floor exercises.
Now, if you’re ready, let’s move together. You might want to grab a broomstick or something similar for balance, but don’t worry, this routine is beginner-friendly. We’ll start at the shoulders, with small rotations, working our way down to the feet. Think of it as a gentle internal massage for those muscles, helping to ease that tightness and discomfort.
Remember, motion is your body’s lotion, providing that much-needed relief. Doing this routine consistently, especially in the mornings or after extended periods of sitting, can be a game-changer for managing and even alleviating muscle pain.
Before I sign off, I want to give a shout-out to my platform, *Your Second 50 Life*. It’s a treasure trove for everyone over 50, packed with exercise videos, mini-courses, and eating plans. Plus, there’s the added bonus of group coaching calls with me!
Till next time, keep moving and stay groovy!
